How to Prepare for Your Cake Smash Session

A cake smash session is a fun and adorable way to celebrate this big milestone!

What to expect

Cake smash sessions last about 45-90 minutes depending on the package you chose. We'll start the session with family photos if you opted for them. This allows  baby a little time to get acclimated to the new environment while being held by parents. After family photos, I'll take milestone photos of your little one on minimalistic sets, focusing on capturing your baby's personality.

The last portion of the session is the cake smash! I will have a custom designed set based on your requested theme, complete with any birthday elements you've requested (balloons, banners, "one" sign, etc.).

First, I'll get a few photos of your baby on this set in the outfit of your choice - without the cake. You may choose to keep baby in this outfit for the cake smash portion too or change into one final outfit to get messy in such as coordinating baby bloomers or overalls. Then, we'll introduce the cake, and I'll spend about 15 minutes documenting your baby's reactions to seeing, tasting, and digging in to their very own cake! Some little ones dig right in and destroy the cake, and others need a little encouragement.

The Cake

You will provide the cake for the session. Smash cakes should be smaller, typically about 6 inches around. Whether you are making the cake, or having it made, please consider the following:

Avoid fondant, gum paste, and cake pearls as they can be choking hazards for the baby.

Be sure the colors of the cake match the theme discussed for the set.

Remove the cake from the refrigerator 1-2 hours before the session to allow the frosting to come to room temperature. This will make it easier for baby to dig into.

What to Wear

Make sure your baby's cake smash outfit coordinates with the colors discussed for the cake smash set.

Bloomers, rompers, and knit overalls are always cute options for cake smashes, especially if you want a less formal look.

We can change outfits before bringing out the cake if you'd like two looks on the same set.

Make it stand out.
